Enjoy a day out at Carlisle Cathedral

Carlisle Cathedral, founded by King Henry I in 1133, is a jewel of the north-west.Carlisle Cathedral exterior In the heart of Carlisle, between rugged Hadrian’s Wall country and the beautiful Lake District, you’ll discover 900 years of living faith and living history. The cathedral’s chequered past tells the story of Augustinian canons, medieval knights, sinners and saints, Civil War skirmishes and more. There are many treasures, including rare 14th century medieval paintings, the glorious East Window, curious stone and wood carvings, the Regimental Chapel of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, stunning stained glass and architectural features, and not-forgetting the majestic and unforgettable starlight ceiling.  In the underground Treasury there are artefacts from across the region telling the story of Christianity in Cumbria from Roman Britain to the present day, and many stories of the battleworn Borderlands to be discovered.

Cumbria’s only cathedral has been a house of God for centuries and daily services are held each day including Choral Evensong with the voices of the combined Cathedral Choirs.  The cathedral and historic precinct are the perfect place for reflection and contemplation, or you can treat yourself with a visit to the newly opened café or the welcome centre for a selection of artisan and locally-sourced food and beautiful gifts.

If you’re visiting Cumbria and the Lakes a visit to Carlisle Cathedral is a must. All are welcome and entry is free. Don’t forget we’re open every day of the year!
