According to an Instagram analysis of 47 million posts, the best country in Europe for a road trip is France. From the glamour of St. Tropez to the extreme peaks of the Alps, there is a place in France for everyone. The second-most popular country for a road trip is Italy, where you can explore the ancient ruins of Rome, the beauty of the Amalfi Coast and the foodie paradise of Naples. The UK came in third place, showing that it can hold its own against the rest of Europe, thanks to the peaceful villages of the Cotswolds, the drama of the Scottish Highlands and the valleys of Wales.

The top road trip routes in Europe were London to Paris (via Kent Downs), the Icelandic Golden Circle and Milan to Venice.

Wherever you choose for a European road trip, you’ll be spoilt for choice with what to eat, drink and post on Instagram.

Tips for Driving in Europe

To be able to drive in Europe, you’ll need a full licence from your home country. Most rental companies will not allow you to rent a car for a road trip if you are under 21, and higher rates might apply until you’re 25. Most European countries drive on the right-hand side of the road, so bear this in mind.
